History of Tissot Watches
Tissot is a Swiss watch manufacturer of the Swatch Group and is located in Le Locle in the canton of Neuchatel. On July 1st, 1853, Charles-Félicien Tissot (a fitter of gold cases) along with his son Charles-Emile Tissot (a watchmaker) laid down its foundations. Tissot's previous timepieces mainly focussed on pocket watches, luxurious pendant watches or complication watches. At that time these were mainly destined for the United States and Russian markets. Later in 1883, the company was overtaken by his son, Charles Emile. And in 1915, being prompted by his son Paul, Charles Emile ventured into the business of wristwatch manufacturing. It was by 1920 that the company was successful in firmly footing itself in this new venture. And this marked the Tissot's entry in the market of wrist watches. In the 1980s and 1990s, it gained an outstanding popularity with its introduction series of fashionable wristwatches whose cases were made of unusual materials such as granite and wood.
It revolutionized the era of the late 1800s by hitting the market with its back to back innovations. It introduced the first mass-produced pocket watch as well as the first pocket watch with two time zones in 1853. Again in 1929–30 it introduced the first anti-magnetic watch.
Now came the time when the Tissot's were ready to hit the Russian markets as well. In a bid to accomplish this Charles-Emile Tissot left for Russia in 1858. Finally, his voyage proved to be a boon as he was successful in selling their Savon Nette pocket watches across the Russian Empire. Tissot has been a member of The Swatch Group Ltd. since 1983 which is the largest watch producer and distributor in the world.
Until today, Le Locle, Switzerland remains to be a home for Tissot, preserving its Swissness at its heart. This is something that made the brand a distinguished one as compared to its other counterparts.
Throughout their history, Tissot has served as an official timing partner for a multitude of major sports including MotoGP, Ice Hockey, Cycling, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) the Fencing World Championships. And eventually, Tissot has been the Official Timekeeper meaning that Tissot has the privilege and the responsibility of actually timing each of these sports.
In 1999, Tissot released the world’s first touchscreen watch, the Tissot T Touch. The Tissot smartwatch containing this technology have touch-sensitive sapphire crystals to control various functions like compasses, barometer, altimeter, and thermometer.
The features specific to various sports are also available, like timers for racing splits, regattas, diving, and a tide indicator for sailing or surfing. Due to these Tissot sport specific customizations, a contestant from any sport can select a Tissot T Touch whichever is suitable to them. The latest models in the Tissot Touch series include The Tissot T Touch Expert Solar and T-Touch Lady Solar which holds 25 functions. With the Tissot T-Touch family extension, classically innovative pieces like the Tissot T-Complication Squelette, and classic dress watches like Tissot Le Locle Automatic, the future of Tissot looks very bright for many upcoming centuries.
