History of Rolex Datejust Watches

For almost 100 years the name "Rolex" stands out for its quality, technology and the style and its associated prestige has been matchless. And since forever it has been coming up with new models, and each time they introduce us with their latest design, it has always blown our mind. Similar is in the case with its Datejust model, The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust is a certified, self-winding chronometer wristwatch. And this is considered to be one of the most special watches, as it was introduced by Rolex in 1945, the year the brand celebrated its 40th anniversary. And want to know what is so special about this watch? Well, the Rolex Datejust was the very first self-winding wristwatch which displayed the date on the dial and had an automatically changing date function. So this is the reason that the Rolex Datejust has become an indispensable part of the Rolex’s line up.

The original gold Rolex Datejust was introduced with the ref. 4467 and it was available only in 18 karats yellow gold and had a small bubble back winder with a deeply domed back. And it was, of course, featuring the Rolex Oyster waterproof case, a fluted bezel, and the new Jubilee bracelet (which was perfectly named for the occasion) and it measured 36mm in diameter. Now the Rolex jubilee bracelet which was specially designed for the occasion was made with a 5-piece metal link bracelet.

Over the years, the Rolex Datejust movement went through subtle alterations which were made to improve its features and it came in an expansion of design options. In 1955, a magnifying Cyclops lens was added in order to magnify the date by two and a half times, which in the later years became one of Rolex’s defining features.

The Rolex Datejust watch model was offered with two classic Rolex bracelets, one in the Jubilee bracelet and the other one, in the Oyster. Although later on the collection had an added on with the introduction of the ladies' and mid-sized versions. The Turn-O-Graph model of this Datejust was introduced in 1955, and it was the award given to the US Air Force pilots who were returning from combat missions. The watch featured a rotating bezel which was marked to 60 minutes that was used to measure the time intervals. The Rolex Datejust of this type has been given the nickname of "Thunderbirds".
The Datejust is one of those models which can just appeal all the watch enthusiasts, no matter their tastes, because of the sheer variety that it is available in. The Datejust comes in a variety of 18kt yellow gold, rose gold, or stainless steel, and is available for both men and women.

Later in 2009, Rolex introduced the Rolex Datejust II. This line of watches came with the iconic Datejust with a more streamlined and modern design and had some new innovations. One of the significant features which differentiate between the Rolex Datejust and the Rolex Datejust II is the movement of the models, that is, the Datejust II is equipped with the chronometer-certified caliber 3136 movements. And the similarity in both the watches is that both of them, the Datejust and the Datejust II feature the iconic Oyster case. The Oyster system of both the models is fixed in an air-tight case which protects the perpetual movement from water and other particles. And another similarity is that Both the watches include the Rolex’s famous Twinlock Winding Crown, which is a system that was created by Rolex in 1953. This system further magnifies the feature of water resistance of the watch with two sealed zones, and also ensures that nothing gets into the case.

The latest model of Rolex Datejust was released with the ref. 126333 Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust 41 watch and it is said that it has quietly replaced the other Datejust II Rolex had been making for a few years. Both the models which were released are larger-sized versions of the classic Rolex Datejust 36, they came in a 36mm-wide case. This Datejust 41 watch can be counted as an elegant watch, as a robust dress watch as well a casual watch. The most striking feature of Rolex Datejust 41 is its blue dial. The metal which is used in the making of Rolex Datejust 41 is Rolesor, it is a term patented by Rolex in 1933, which refers to the marriage of white gold and steel. And at Baselworld 2017, Rolex followed up with this 2016 Datejust 41 collection with two new models. And the year’s additions were in two new white metal version.

So whether you opt for the Datejust which in its classic size Rolex Datejust 36 or the new one Rolex Datejust 41, you apparently just can’t go wrong with any of these models. It is not just a perfect watch for those who just fancy one watch, but it is also an ideal addition to any collection. It is incredibly comfortable and especially with the fancy looking Jubilee bracelet, or the Oyster bracelet it has that beautiful head-turner look.
