History of Oris Divers

Oris has been a leading manufacturer of luxury Swiss wristwatches since 1904. Oris ventured into the industry of manufacturing diving watches in the year 1965, with this legendary Oris Dive watch. This iconic watch eventually gave birth to today’s Oris Divers series of watches. The 1965 Oris Dive model was equipped with a chromium-plated brass case and Plexiglas crystal, a bidirectional rotating bezel, and a black plastic strap, while its modern version has a wide range of contemporary modifications.

A bird's eye glance at the Oris Diving Collection shows that it's composed of Oris Divers Collection, Oris Aquis Collection, and Oris Prodivers collection. In this particular article, we will focus on the history and details of the Oris Diver's Collection for men.

These Oris watches further have a range of models under different subcategories like Oris Diver's Collection includes two models under Oris Diver's Sixty Five Chronograph, one model under Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph Limited Edition, one model under Oris Movember Collection, one model under Oris Diver's Sixty Five 2018 Collection and 55 models under Oris Divers Sixty Five Collection.

As aforementioned, the Divers Sixty-Five Chronograph looks back to Oris's first diver's watch, the 1965 Diver model. Under their vintage aesthetic, the new pieces are engineered using state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques. The new Oris Divers Sixty-Five shares the retro looks of the 1965s original model, but it has been modernized using 21st-century watchmaking techniques. The case is made of anti-corrosive stainless steel. The vintage-inspired bubble-curved glass is made of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and comes with anti-reflective coating on the inside to reduce glare and increase legibility underwater. The steel case back is engraved with the same historical Oris emblem present on the original. Further, the bronze bezel edge and rose-gold plated dial details add to the watch's stylish retro look.

The Divers Sixty-Five watch marks Oris's commitment to bringing a change for the better and the company's participation in World Clean-Up Day. The latest version of Divers Sixty-Five watch comes with a strap made of an innovative material produced using recycled plastic. The material, r-Radyarn®, is made from post-consumer recycled polymer and manufactured using processes that greatly reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and water and energy consumption.

Oris Carl Brashear Chronograph, a bronze-cased, two-counter chronograph watch, was made in the memory of Carl Brashear, who was one of the most inspirational figures of the 20th century. Carl Brashear defied racial tensions, disability and the weight of history to become the U.S. Navy’s first African American and first amputee Master Diver.

The Oris Movember Edition marks Oris's role as an Official Watch Partner of the Movember Foundation and continues the company's ‘Change for the Better campaign'. The watch is based on the iconic Oris Divers Sixty-Five model and features a number of design details inspired by the international men's health organization.

Oris’ Divers Sixty-Five, the Swiss watch company’s retro diver’s watch, has won legion admirers since its launch. It’s now set to attract a new wave of followers with the introduction of one of the most intriguing materials in contemporary watchmaking – bronze.

Bronze is a natural material. Depending on factors such as the pH levels of your skin and atmospheric moisture, it develops a patina over time, a quirk which means that no two of the new watches entering the line will look alike – instead they will take on a finish unique to their owner.

Oris has also worked with bronze before in the two limited edition models made in honor of Carl Brashear, the US Navy's first African-American and first amputee master diver. Both the watches are based on Oris' Divers Sixty-Five model, but this is the first time bronze has been incorporated into the main collection.

Oris has introduced bronze subtly and unconventionally. The Oris Divers Sixty-Five series has a bronze outer ring around the edge of its unidirectional rotating bezel. When combined with the rose gold PVD-plated hands and hour markers, it gives the watch its warmth and vintage charm.

Oris is introducing two case sizes with the bi-color bronze finish, one 40mm and one 36mm, the latter, a new size introduced to the Divers Sixty-Five family this year to cater for smaller wrists. Both versions are powered by mechanical movements that give the 40mm version a ‘date’ at 6 o'clock and the 36mm version a ‘date’ at 3 o'clock.

Oris only makes mechanical men’s dive watches – there is no quartz in the collection. Furthermore, both the models are water-resistant up to 100 meters, carry Oris's historic crest on a stainless steel case back, and come on either leather, NATO textile or rubber straps, or even on a stainless steel bracelet.

With its bronze twist, the new Oris Divers watch collection marks a huge milestone in the life of one of the company’s most successful designs.
