History of Longines Watches
The legend of the Longines was initiated in the year 1832 by Auguste Agassiz. The founder of this watch company, Agassiz, was trained in business and for quite some time he worked in the banking sector. He along with his two partners named Henri Raiguel and Florian Morel decided to establish their own watchmaking enterprise in the town of Saint-Imier. Thus began the journey of this reputed Swiss luxury watchmakers.
In the initial stage, the partnership that was made amongst these investors was named as Raiguel Jeune & Cie., although later, as we know, this was changed to Longines and gave birth to this renowned brand. Due to the founder's business connections in America, the company soon held a large place in the market and the Longines watches that were assembled by them gained high popularity.
In the course of time, Raiguel and Morel retired and the entire company was left over to Agassiz. Due to poor health in 1850, even Agassiz was forced to take early retirement, although he held on to being a partner until his death in 1877. Two years after Agassiz quit, in 1852, the Longines company was handed over to his nephew Ernest Francillon who bought in various changes and innovations which further uplifted the brand.
The company acquired its name from the long meadows of Les Longines, located in the south of Saint Imier, where Francillon purchased land in 1866. Although the name of the company was changed later in the year 1867.
In the initial days of watchmaking, a regular watch consisted of a typical movement and was assisted with cylindrical escapements that were wound with keys. Nevertheless, known for being outstanding and creative, Francillon decided to come up with something innovative and thought against the key-wound mechanism. Following this was the outcome of Longines watches that were now wounded through the use of the crown, and all of this began in the year 1867.
In 1867, Francillon also brought in Jaques David so as to acquire some help in the implementation of the industrialization that Francillon had planned out in his mind and intent to pursue. Thus David took hold of the operation that was required in setting up of the new factory which included buying and placing the equipment and the mechanical systems. Hence Longines grew at a fast pace and released many models with outstanding features and capabilities.
