History of Zenith Watches

Zenith was founded in 1865 by Georges Favre-Jacout. The company started off with the name “Georges Favre-Jacot & Cie”. Georges Favre-Jacout was a 22-year-old apprentice in the watch industry, who started the company with the vision of bringing the complete manufacturing process of watches under one roof. Today, Zenith is one of the few watch manufacturers who produce their timepieces entirely in one manufacturing unit. In 1899 the manufactures launched their first pocket watch which led to Georges Favre-Jacout winning a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1900. In the year 1911, the manufacturing plant adopted the name ""Fabrique des Montres Zenith"". It was the year 1915 when the company decided to produce wristwatches. The company continued to produce handcrafted chronographs over the years to come and in 1948 it came up with Caliber 135 movement. The renowned movement featured small second movement and earned the company 235 awards across various events and exhibitions. The company produced other such movements in the following years and established itself as a leading player in the high-end watch market. In 1969, the company came up with El Primero, its most famous and the first automatic movement in the history of watch manufacturing. In 1994, the company came up with its ultra-thin automatic elite movement. The year was 2000 when Zenith came under the LVMH luxury group. In 2012, the company made history when Australian skydiver Felix Baumgartner wore the Zenith watch while breaking the sound barrier in his skydive from a space capsule. The company continued coming up with new models and complex movements in the year to come and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2015.
