History of Grand Seiko 9S Mechanical Watches
Grand Seiko is a brand who creates luxury watches. They were first launched in the year 1960 and until 2017 they were a part of the renowned company Seiko. Although Grand Seiko retired in the year 1976 but it was resurrected a decade later and introduced its quartz Grand Seiko in 1986.
Out of all the drool-worthy models that the Grand Seiko holds, one of them is its Grand Seiko Mechanical. The brand’s 9S Mechanical Calibre was released in the year 1998 which replaced the original 9SGS. Furthermore, Grand Seiko gained much of the spotlight with the return of Grand Seiko GMT in 2002, Spring Drive versions in 2004 and Hi-Beat variants in 2009.
Now, focusing on its Mechanical watches, as we know, the modern Grand Seiko Mechanical was re-launched in the year 1998. These watches were now all powered with the updated calibre 5200, which, at present, stands in a separate family line known as the 9S. The initial releases of this series made use of 9S 51 and 9S 55. These variants were equipped with an unusual and remarkable mainspring that extended its capacity of reserving power up to 50 hours. Although these Grand Seiko models were made available only in Japan. Over the years, this family line has evolved and expanded greatly and they all have taken their inspiration from the actual 44GS.
Currently, all the Grand Seiko watches are created and made to perfection at the Shizukuishi Watch Studio. The creation of Grand Seiko Mechanical Watches has set a new standard amongst the world of watches. Since its first watch, the Seiko company has always tried to be innovative and have come up with brand new creative ideas. It has advanced its mechanical watches and has built them to suit the taste of their every client.
Initially, the idea was just to renovate the existing watches, but with time, this renovation turned into a quality that has now become ideal for all the watch enthusiasts.
The mechanism of this watch is quite exquisite. The idea is to create a timepiece which is extremely accurate as well as precise, and the Grand Seiko Mechanical watches have conquered over this concept. These Grand Seiko mechanical watches hold at least two hundred to three hundred individual parts and are built to perfection.
The hidden truth behind its flawlessness is its MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) technology. This is what brings the mechanical accuracy of the watch. It makes use of an escapement that gains its power from the functioning of its mainspring – this is one of the features that has remained the same since the creation of watches. The balance, pallet fork and the escape wheel of this timepiece work hand in hand giving the output of steady rotation of its hour, minute and second hands.
The highlight of a mechanical watch is its hairspring which acts as a heart to its functioning and governs its accuracy. This hairspring of the watch has been aptly inserted in order to perfect its mechanism. Furthermore, the watch has been polished by hand, focusing on its intricate details.
Recently, the Grand Seiko launched three limited editions in the year 2018 in order to celebrate its 20th anniversary. These three uniquely built timepieces pay tribute to the heritage of the original 9S calibre. These watches are simple yet elegant and they uphold a uniquely Japanese style.
The three limited editions are referenced as – Hi-Beat 36000 V.F.A. SBGH265, Hi-Beat 36000 Special SBGH266 and Hi-Beat 36000 SBGH267. The V.F.A. (Very Fine Adjusted) sits aptly on the watch's 6 o clock and reflects its functioning.
These new creations are powered by 9S85 Hi-Beat 36000 calibre which offers a precision of +3 to -1 seconds per day. This has been achieved through a testing program which was conducted for a period of 34 days. Hence the watch has attained the highest level of accuracy.
One of its exceptional references is its Grand Seiko GMT Hi-Beat 36000 (SBGJ227) 'Peacock'. This Grand Seiko watch was introduced in the year 2017. The GMT collection holds several variants including green dial version (the model that won the Petit Aiguille) and another, with a textured deep red dial, having preceded it (SBGJ005 and SBGJ021 respectively) as well as a 10th anniversary model, with blue dial (in two versions; one on a strap, and one on a bracelet with a 24 hour bezel).
Another drool-worthy watch from its recent collection is its Grand Seiko Automatic with the reference of SBGR053. It is considered to be one of the most affordable luxury watches. It is quite small as it comes in a case size of 37 mm although its thickness can be measured as 13.3mm. The looks of this Grand Seiko watch are extremely subtle and reserved and it sits comfortably on any wrist. With its dauphine hands, the watch is really admired by all the watch lovers.
