History of Rolex Sky Dweller Watches
Rolex is that one brand which can do no wrong. So buying a Rolex watch is not just about buying a tool which tells the time, or buying into a particular club of Rolex owners, but it is also about buying a design institution. And when it comes to its Sky Dweller model, the Rolex introduced a brand new movement, which happens to be the most complicated movement that Rolex produces and it is considered as one of the most complicated watch (in terms of its mechanical function) which Rolex has ever made. And for some, it also possesses a bit of contradictory character.
Now Rolex initially debuted this Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky Dweller watch collection at Baselworld 2012, and when it was introduced it was available only in precious metals. The Sky Dweller is a luxurious watch and is not one of the sports model offered by the Rolex, and it is considered to be visually similar to the previous model of Rolex which is the Day Date. But, the Rolex Sky Dweller offered a new special technology which allows the dial to display both an annual calendar as well as dual time.
In the Sky Dweller Rolex 2012 startling model, the Rolex presented the watch whose construction bears 14 patents – five of which are new. The functions of the Sky Dweller comprises of three major and unique feature which distinguished it from the other models, they were the annual calendar with date and month display, a second time-zone and a 24-hour display. Thus the Sky Dweller is the only Rolex watches with unique, purpose-built complicated movement.
The other special feature of this watch is the simplicity and the directness of its control logic. The fluted bezel of the watch is called the "Ring Command" bezel, this feature allows the new basic functions of the watch to be adjusted easily as well as understood. And this function is performed depending on whether it is rotated by one, two or three positions counterclockwise, the setting of a different function is possible: date, local or reference time. The selected function of the watch can then immediately be adjusted by the crown. The crown consists of only one setting position which is in one direction or the other. In contrast to the usual regulatory mechanisms, the setting underlies no restrictions.
The movement of the Sky Dweller features a development which is a newly manufactured movement, it is the Rolex 9001 with COSC chronometer certificate. The movement is equipped with the parachrom blue hairspring which has been developed by the Rolex itself and has an escapement wheel of paramagnetic material. The high power reserve of this lasts for three days, that is, up till 72 hours.
The case of all the Sky Dweller has a diameter of 42 mm. The watch is, of course, waterproof to 10 atm. It has a high-performance paraflex shock absorber and a large balance wheel with variable inertia. The dial of the watch comes in ivory with sunray finish/champagne, satin-finished / chocolate with a sunray finish. And the bracelets of the Rolex Sky Dweller is available in Oyster bracelet, white gold or yellow gold, with folding clasp and the rose gold Sky Dweller model (Everose) has brown alligator leather with folding clasp in Everose.
Now as far as the calendar feature is concerned, it is nothing to brag about for Rolex, but the Sky Dweller offers an exceptional annual calendar feature which is based on a mechanism that is called SAROS. This name has been derived from the Greek term for the cycle of the earth, moon, and the sun. Rolex's skill is quite evident in the calendar feature of the Sky Dweller, as it is capable of calculating when the right number of dates have passed so it can properly and accurately turn to reveal the new month. The dial also represents the months. For instance, the two o'clock mark would represent February, which is the second month.
As you know the calendar is not only the noteworthy characteristic of this Sky Dweller, but the watch also has the ability to tell time for two different time zones. So the local time is set on the main dial because it is most commonly read and also works in conjunction with the date feature. And the second time zone in the dial is read using an off-centered rotating disc with numbers ranging from 1 to 24 which is above the six o'clock mark. The secondary time zone is read using the small red arrow hand.
So although it is known to be a complicated watch, it is still the most interesting one. And the purpose of introducing this Sky Dweller Rolex was to provide a timepiece meant for the modern jet-setter who uses his watch both for utility as well as a status item Thus the Rolex Sky Dweller provides the information which is required by the global travelers to keep track of time at a glance. And it is also a compelling timepiece which possesses a revolutionary design that blends to perfection mechanical sophistication and is ease of use.
